The Museum

The permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Asturias, aims to satisfy all audiences, from the expert on the archeology and history of Asturias, to the curious visitor who comes to discover the history of Asturias.

The Archaeological Museum of Asturias since 1952 is housed in the old cloister of the convent of San Vicente in the city of Oviedo. This building, whose rich history it relates to the origin of the city, was declared a national monument in 1934.
The elements that constitute the permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Asturias are housed in the cloister of the convent of San Vicente and the four floors of a modern building occupies part of the site of the old monastery.
The origin of the present Archaeological Museum of Asturias, is in the Museum of Antiquities of the Asturias Monuments Commission, created between 1844 and 1846 as the first stable institution responsible for protecting the cultural heritage of Asturias.
