Conference Egyptology in Spain: from private collecting to the consolidation of a scientific discipline.

by Mrs. ISABEL OLBES RUIZ DE ALDA, Department of Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities of the National Archaeological Museum.

The fascination of Egyptian culture, millenary and complex, was perceived in Europe since ancient times. The biblical texts became an obligatory reference for the first travelers and pilgrims, as well as for cartographers and navigators. But it was not until the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century when, with Napoleon's military campaigns in Egypt and the study carried out by the scientific expedition, this ancient culture was rediscovered.

The beginnings of Egyptology in Spain are rooted precisely in the 19th century, with private initiatives, linked to incipient collecting, but also to personal experiences.
