Covadonga in the photographic work of Daniel A. Fervienza (1890-1910)

Temporary exhibition from 12 August to 11 September 2022

on the occasion of the 1,300th anniversary of the Battle of Covadonga

The exhibition Covadonga in the photographic gaze of Daniel Álvarez Fervienza (1857-1951) brings together the work that this master photographer produced between 1890 and 1910, with the aim of documenting the evolution of the construction of the Basilica of Covadonga and the transformation of the surrounding area, a project that represented a major technical, logistical and economic challenge at the time.

The retrospective is part of the programme promoted by the Government of Asturias to commemorate the 1.300th anniversary of the Battle of Cuadonga/Covadonga and can be visited until 11 September at the Archaeological Museum of Asturias.

Daniel Álvarez Fervienza is one of the first names in the history of Asturian photography who became a professional photographer after working as a teacher in Llanes. His legacy forms part of the private collection of Antonio Diego Llaca, curator of the exhibition, who has loaned the material for the exhibition.
