EUROPEAN DAYS OF ARCHAEOLOGY 2022

This year 2022, the Archaeological Museum of Asturias joins the invitation of the Directorate General of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, through the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE), to collaborate in the international celebration of this initiative that will have as its central theme the century and a half of archaeological activity developed in the Castro de Coaña. On this occasion, visits to the site have been programmed to showcase the scientific work carried out at this site from the 19th century to the present day, following in the footsteps of the pioneers of Castro archaeology in Asturias.

With this celebration, the collaborating institutions aim to raise awareness of the transnational nature of archaeological heritage, the specific procedures of archaeology professionals and their contributions to the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage. It is essential to encourage the participation of citizens and associations working for the recovery and dissemination of archaeological remains, as well as the contribution of local institutions in the management, conservation and enrichment of their heritage.

On Saturday 18 June the proposed activity is:

- Guided tour of the ruins of the Castro de Coaña and its interpretation centre, following the trail of the archaeological work that has been carried out on the site since the 19th century and the different readings that have been made of it in each period.

The tours will take place at 12.00 noon and 4.30 p.m., provided that a minimum number of people are interested (12 minimum and 20 maximum). Estimated visiting time: 60 minutes. Gratuit. The meeting point for participants will be the Visitor Reception Centre of the Castro de Coaña (Villacondide, Coaña).

The tour will be explained by Ángel Villa Valdés, an archaeologist from the Archaeological Museum of Asturias and a specialist in the archaeology of the hillfort.
