The presence of human groups in Asturias dates back about 300,000 years. Different species inhabited this region during the Quaternary geologic stage with oscillations between cold and warm periods. In response to environmental conditions, people occupied prehistoric caves and shelters near rivers. Archaeological research has revealed their livelihood strategies (hunting, fishing and gathering) and find the technical advances in the manufacture of tools. Similarly, we can approach the enigmatic symbolic world that finds its most eloquent expression in the parietal Paleolithic art and furniture. In Asturias there are almost fifty caves with images of great beauty where our earliest ancestors recorded or painted animals and signs.
